FOOD FRIDAY ~ Anti-Recession Brownies

For the past 4 weeks every Monday, 2 fellow schoolmates and I brave the cold every winter morning to travel to Manukau Institute of Technology to attend the Baking and Pastry for Cafe S.T.A.R course.
I call these the 'Anti-Recession Brownies' due to the vast amounts of butter, sugar and eggs used and the skyrocketing price of these products; and how in this economic climate we're facing, its not a very viable food choice (Hence why we were only allowed to part with 1/3 of our loot..)
The recipe is very simple and takes mere minutes to throw together.
I would share with you a photo of these tasty morsels but they didn't survive sitting in the freezer for very long..
WARNING - HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!

Berry, berry nice.

Today I wanted to bake some berry muffins, so I did.

As I scanned through screeds and screeds of google results for 'berry muffin recipe' my search came to a stop as I stumbled upon a recipe by Allyson Gofton. It was actually a recipe for apricot and almond berry muffins but seeing as a have an incredible dislike for anything apricot flavoured, I rapidly removed the ingredient from the list. As for the almonds, we didn't have any...
Before commencing, I decided to double the recipe below, seeing the phrase 'makes 12 muffins' never sounds like very many..

Ingredients:
3 cups flour
2 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/4 cups milk
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
100 grams butter, melted, cooled
1 1/2 cups blackberries (use any berries you otherwise prefer or that are available.)

Method:
1) Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar into a large bowl and make a well in the centre.
2) Mix together the milk, eggs, and vanilla essence. Fold into the flour with the cooled melted butter and berries.
3) Spoon mixture into muffin tins.
4) Bake at 220°C for 15 minutes or so until well golden and cooked through (cooking time may depend on your oven so I recommend checking the muffins from time to time)

Its a simple but very delicious recipe that's quick and easy to make. These muffins keep well in an airtight container and can also be put in the freezer.

Enjoy =)

Waste not, Want not.

I've noticed a very prominent trend in retail lately, attempted Eco-friendliness.

My parents and I made a trip to the city today to go do a bit of shopping. Upon arrival to the checkouts, I was astonished at how many shops charge money to supply you a plastic bag to hold your purchased goods. I mean, slightly ironic right? Wouldn't it make more sense to instead of supplying shoppers with plastic bags, using paper bags instead? This being somewhat cheaper, fully biodegradable and from a renewable resource. All well and good them trying to do their bit for the environment but its a bit "3 steps forward, 4 steps back"..

Keeping in theme of being ECO chic, that dreaded spring clean is nigh. Before you attempt to overhaul your makeup collection, you may want to keep these tips in mind...

Favourite mascara all dried up?
Get ride of the tube but hold on the wand. Give it a thorough clean in some hot soapy water, then a good rinse and store it with your makeup brushes. It'll be ideal to use for separating your lashes and combing your brows.

Facial scrub too grainy?
Instead of putting it on your face, use it for rough elbows, knees and feet where the skin is less sensitive.

Fragrance doesn't suit you?
If it smells great in the bottle but not on your skin then it'll be prefect as a spray for the rooms in your house.

Lipstick doesn't look right?
Invest in a lip brush. Then you can start custom-blending your own lipstick shades from all those half used colours. Blend on the lips rather than on the tube or a separate container - makeup artists do this all the time.

Foundation too light?
Use it beneath your eyes to lighten dark circles. Or keep it until winter when your skin will be paler and blend it with a darker shade to get the right tone for you.

Powder eyeshadow too bright or too dark?
Instead of putting it all over your lib, use it as an eyeliner. Just wet a fine brush, dip into the shadow and then draw a line close to your top lashes.

Powder bronzer too dark for your cheeks?
Have you tried using it as an eyeshadow? Bronzer on the eyelids is an old make-up artists trick for a natural, well-rested look at works well at this time of the year. Blend it with a bit of shimmer or highlighting powder if its too matte.

Wrinkle cream not working?
Don't give up too quickly. Skin cells regenerate every four weeks so it will take that long to notice any change. Of course, if any product brings you out in a rash, you should stop using it!

Moisturiser too heavy for your face?
Use it on your body, especially hands and feet which will drink up any amount of rich cream you put on. Feet are also a great place to use products with too much alpha hydroxy acid for sensitive facial skin. These product will make removing dead skin cells much easier.

Eye cream makes your eyes look puffy in the morning?
Try using it as a neck cream or on the decolletage instead.

Toner too strong for your face?
The skin on your legs, arms and buttocks can benefit from a little toning too. Just splash it on after your shower and then moisturise as usual.

Shampoo and conditioner not working for you?
Try using them to hand wash and soften delicate woolen garments this winter.
